What is a Medical Thriller? In fiction a thriller is a broad genre that is characterized by its exciting elements, specifically, as regards fast-paced scenes, constant action, and usually heroes that are resourceful, thus able to outmaneuver antagonists that are stronger or more powerful. A medical thriller is a unique sub-genre of a thriller, since it dwells on medical practice and characters within the medical community. However, a well-written medical thriller would not only appeal to doctors but to a mainstream audience. After all, some of the most exciting books and television shows in history have been based in a hospital. In Michael Esposito’s “Locked In” readers are introduced to Dr. John Armstrong, a respected Tampa radiologist, and Cal Burton, his college roommate, who uncover a shocking plot of malpractice fraud, and doctors toying with human lives.
