Learning the Medical Thrillers GenreThere have been courtroom thrillers, espionage thrillers and even supernatural thrillers. “Medical thrillers” is a niche genre that has recently catapulted to the mainstream thanks to successful writers like Michael Crichton. Structurally speaking, this special type of genre resembles a conventional thriller: it has a hero that is guided by wits, which he will then use to battle more powerful enemies, and the narrative consists of fast-paced action scenes, usually with heavy dialogue. The medical sub-genre of a thriller takes place in a medical setting and the villains are far more complex. Instead of “bad guys” the antagonists here are ethically challenged insurance companies and doctors. Michael Esposito’s “Locked In” is one example of a medical thrillers genre and worth checking out.
